Answers about the Box and Lunch League

Every month, Bahman and I get asked questions about the Lunch League and Box League. We thought we would get our act together and provide you, once and for all, with the answers to those questions. They apply to both leagues. - Gavin

I am not able to schedule my match with John Doe, what happens?

In the event that two players cannot make a scheduled match during the month, no score is recorded. Neither player is able to take the match as a default. The league scoring encourages players to play out their matches. Even in the case of a 3-0 loss, the losing player will still get 1 point. In the event that both parties cannot schedule a match neither player gets any points. A non-schedule is a lose-lose.

I scheduled a match with Jane Doe, they did not show up, what happens?

If a match is scheduled, and your opponent does not show, you are able to take the match as a default. Record no score, and instead of recording “Completed” record “Default” in the status drop-down. If you do have time in the month to reschedule, we would encourage you to play out the game.

I was playing my match with player John Doe, and they retired injured mid match, what happens?

If the player cannot complete the match, record the game scores up to that point, and enter “Retired” in the status drop-down? If a player is injured and out for the month, he/she should inform their league administrator, who will remove them from the box. And we are sorry you got hurt.

I was playing our match, and we did not finish, what do I do?

If you can, try and finish the match if courts are available. If not, your first option should be to reschedule and finish the match (do not start a new match). If that is not possible, enter the match scores and record “Tie” in the status drop-down.

What happens if I am injured?

As above, if you are injured and cannot play for the month, please tell your league administrator (Bahman or Gavin) and we will remove you from your box. Any matches that have been played will not count, either for you or your opponent.

I cannot play next month(s) league I am away. What do I do?

If you will not be able to play in the league for some reason, please contact your league administrator (Bahman or Gavin), by email before the end of the month, and we will take you off. Please email, it’s nice that you tell us in the club, but our memories aren’t that good.

I want to get on the ladder next month. I already have a US Squash ranking. What do I do?

If you want to play on the ladder and already have a US Squash ranking (that’s the number with 3 decimal places - like 4.128 – next to your name on the US Squash system) all you have to do is email your league administrator (Bahman or Gavin) before the end of the month, and you will be slotted in to the next month’s league. You will be placed according to your latest ranking, below the lowest player in the league with the same ranking.

I want to get on the ladder next month. I don’t have a US Squash ranking. What do I do?

To play in either the lunch league or the box league, you must have an ID on the US Squash system, (See registering on US Squash) and a US Squash ranking. If you have not yet earned a ranking your league administrator will place you on the ladder according to their best estimate of your ability. This may mean that you are asked to play a game prior to joining the league.

I did not move up, and I thought I should have. Why was that?

You move up or down the ladder based on accumulated points. The system automatically does this. Sometimes players you beat will have played all their matches while you missed one. Sometimes new players (re)entering the league above you will move everyone down, or conversely, players leaving will move others up.

I had a disagreement with John Doe about let calls last time I played him. I really don’t want to play him again, do I have to?

Yes. This is meant to be friendly competition, and we encourage you to play. Even the best players disagree about certain calls. Don’t be shy about asking another player in the club to referee your match. Most players would be happy to do so. It is much better to do that than to try to explain to Adam what happened after the fact.

Do I have to use Point a Rally Scoring? I much prefer the old way to 9.

Point a Rally scoring (PAR) to 11 is the standard scoring system for the league. If you win your match too quickly, be nice and play out a few more games.
